Consisting of local amateur musicians of all ages, the Hemel
Hempstead Band, a brass band, based in Hertfordshire, England,
continues it's quest to entertain the public more than a century
after it's foundation.
The
full brass band of 20 - 30 players regularly performs for a variety
of public or private functions and concerts at Sports Events,
Carnivals, Fetes, Park Bandstands, (including the London Parks),
Church events, Shopping Arcades, Remembrance Day Parades, and many
other social gatherings, mostly within the Dacorum district of
Hertfordshire.
The Band also helps to raise funds for local charities and
institutions which in the past have included the Hospice of St
Francis, the Macmillan Nurse Appeal, the Sgt Pepper Charity
Concerts, the Freemasons Charity Fetes, the Royal British Legion and
the Rotary Club of Tring. Opportunities to perform further afield
occasionally bring additional interest to the Band's schedule, and
performances have been given at Looe in Cornwall, in Turnhout ,
Belgium, in Hammelberg, and Neu Isenburg, Germany and in Stockholm ,
Sweden.
Although the playing members are encouraged, and expected, to spend
time on individual practice, twice weekly rehearsals and training
sessions are held under the control of the Band's musical director,
and during the quieter winter season these rehearsals are directed
towards national and local contests, which help to ensure continued
interest and further musical progress. The Band has an extensive
music library containing nearly 3,000 items of music extending from
pop to classics, which is continually being expanded. So, whatever
the occasion, the Band will almost certainly have the capability of
providing suitable musical entertainment.
The members have free use of a large number of brass musical
instruments, all of which are owned, maintained, and insured by the
Band, although some members choose to use instruments owned by
themselves. However, it is necessary to maintain an acceptable
balance of instrumentation when it comes to public performances, and
for that reason the Band maintains a large reservoir of equipment.
All performing members are provided with uniform jackets and ties.
All money raised by the Band is used to meet running costs.
